Predator

Warning: this is NOT a movie review!  :D     I know I am older than most of my readers so it is possible you may not have a clue what I going to mention first.  Growing up I can remember a TV show called “Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom” with Marlin Perkins.  (The show was an early version of “Crocodile Hunter” and other shows like it).  Mr. Perkins was a dapper older man who stood or sat on the corner of a desk and talked about his safaris and jaunts into the wild hunting big game.  I didn’t watch it very often due to my schedule (I was always on the go playing outside) and when it was on (usually Saturday afternoon),  but when rain prohibited outside activities and I was home, I would sit down and watch it.  I have to admit an affinity for the big cats.  I was intrigued by their style, their size, their ability to hunt, the way they knew where a weak link was, and their stealth.  They were patient in watching the zebra or antelope or whatever their prey was.

I am sure you know where this is going.  Satan, whom I prefer to call the Enemy, is much like those big cats.  In fact, he is described as being “like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” [I Peter 5:8]  The enemy is an opportunist.  He is always looking for open doors, opportunities, chinks in our armor, cracked-open windows, whatever we allow that he might seize as an opportunity to catch us unaware.  Let me put it another way: he is looking for our vulnerable place.  I liken it to a war involving some type of gunfire, shells, or heavy artillery.  A position is weakened and then falls.  Sort of like the battle at Helms Deep we see depicted in Lord of the Rings.  All predators look for the vulnerable one-whether we are talking animals or in spiritual warfare.

It makes me stop and think about what I am doing to make myself vulnerable to the enemy.  Am I getting too close to sin?  Am I playing with fire or getting too close to the edge?  Am I finding other things  taking my time away from being with God where I can renew my strength?  What about you?  Do you have any thoughts you would like to share about this post?  What are you doing in the area of vulnerability i.e. to keep yourself from being more vulnerable?  I would like to hear from you.
