Organized

Thursday, March 8th, 2012

Have you ever met someone who organized themselves to death?  Let me clarify: they had a place for everything and everything in its place.  Please don’t misunderstand: this is not a post against a person who is OCD or autistic.  I know some really cool people who are both of those.  I am referring to people who…

Have a file folder for every loose sheet of paper or category of possibility.

Have such a “fetish” for organization that to have one thing go cattywampus sends them into panic mode.

Have lists upon lists and have lists for their lists.

CONFESSION: I.  AM.  NOT.  ONE.  OF.  THEM.

Don’t get me wrong.  I like order.  When I go home at night my desk is cleared and often ready for the next day.  My clothes drawers are orderly, but not overly.  My clothes are hung up at the end of the day (comes from upbringing and not having much).  And I am okay with the church functioning with some order.  But the problem with many churches (as I see it), is too many are ordered by their order.  To deviate from their “Order of Worship” would throw some people into a frenzy.  “What do you mean Communion was put last instead of in the middle?”  Now I have to stay for the whole service!  🙂    “What do you mean we are not going to say the ‘Lord’s Prayer’ every Sunday morning?”  It is, after all, my only time to pray during the week.   “What do you mean we started on time?”  Now I have to get here on time and not take a few extra minutes at McD’s. Meetings get thrown out of whack. “Wait a second.  Is that according to the by-laws and Robert’s Rules of Order?”  How dare him change things without telling me.  (Pure satire.  Statement made and what they really mean

You get the point.  Truth is: some churches organize themselves to death.  Nothing gets done without a thousand checks and balances.  Sadly, many think well-organized church programs, magnificent & well-kept  church buildings, more and longer meetings, better-functioning church systems, or by-laws guarantees longevity and success.   I am not opposed to order, but to be silly enough to think that stuff like that is going to make a dent or change the world is beyond mere cock-eyed thinking.   People’s lives are changed by Jesus…Jesus living in His people, and out through His people.  That will be my focus Sunday.   What can the church do to encourage people to enter the presence of Jesus?

I’d like your thoughts.  I might even use them on Sunday if they fit.   Okay, so I will plagiarize.   😉  On Monday’s post, I plan to share some of my thoughts on what tears people down and says, “Stay away!”

I’d also like to ask your prayers for some folks.  One, for a new couple that led me to spend some time in the jail this past week.  No, not as in inmate.  😀  Another for Dan.  He has surgery next Friday.   Thanks.

This post is late for me.  I have had a zoo of a week and so I got a bit behind in posting today.  But, maybe there is a reason.  I woke up early this morning (early even for me) and a song was on my mind.  I will tell you more at the end.   Before I have you listen to the song though, I would like to add some thoughts.

IMHO one of the most damaging and devastating teachings that has ever been put on the minds of men has to be what is commonly called the Health/Wealth Gospel.  I prefer to call it the “Un-gospel” because there is nothing gospel about it.  It goes against the teachings of Scripture, which alone is enough to condemn it.  The teaching that “God promises you health and wealth” and the blatant misuse of Isaiah 55:5 (“by His stripes we are healed”) comes from the pit of hell and smells like smoke.  I don’t think I need to reiterate all the “If that is true then why…” arguments that come into the picture when trying to question it.  That would be an insult to your intelligence.  If you haven’t gathered already,  I think it is just down-right evil to propagate that garbage.  And frankly, it doesn’t matter to me whether it is Mr. Smiley; or Mr. “Big Preacher” sweating up a storm; or Mr. Slick TV man with his mansion and private jet; or Mr. Country Preacher who want to make a name for himself…it is evil.  (Ask me how I really feel 😉  )

I have seen too many people suffer untold disappointment from the failure of “God to come through according to my demands” to stomach any excuses.  I have seen too many slick so called prophets propheteers (spelling on purpose) hurt more believers to give one whip or one ounce of sympathy to the garbage that is spewing out of their mouths and onto so many who might sincerely want to follow Jesus. And what they are saying about the Christ-followers in other countries who are neither healthy nor wealthy is blatant false teaching, not to say, mean.

Down off soap box now.

If you haven’t already, it is time to stand against this blatant perversion of the true Gospel.  God is God whether He answers our pleas the way we want or not.  He is still faithful and has His purpose in our lives.  Health or no health.  Wealth or no wealth.  Up or down.  Hill or valley.  Riding high on the crest or hunkered down in the bunker.  God is still God.

As I stated at the beginning, I woke up early with a song on my mind.  I bought the new Kutless CD last week, and even though I would like it to rock a bit more, there are some good songs on it.  This is one of them.  Enjoy the song, then enjoy the short interview (2 minutes).   Meanwhile, what are your thoughts?
