Thirst

Friday, August 8th, 2014

I’ve been hungry. I’ve even fasted for 4 days at a time.

I’ve been tired. I’ve gone without sleep or with very little sleep from time to time. You can’t be a youth pastor and not do that. 🙂 (Those days are long over).

I’ve been sightless. Not blind but in a place so dark I could not see my hand in front of my face.

I’ve even been feeling-less. After my bike accident in 2009, I eventually lost feeling in my left index and middle finger. Numb.

I’ve also been thirsty. Famished. Dry as a bone. Too long of a ride on the bike without water. Too long outside with taking a break.  During one of his Tour de France wins, Lance Armstrong rode an individual Time Trial and was dehydrated. His body was a “sight” after that event.

I think of all the above, I hate being thirsty and dehydrated the most. Tired? Lay down. Hungry? Eat until full. But thirsty? I’m not sure there is ever an initial “re-hydrated” reached. Eventually, the stores are supplied but it takes awhile. Some even need IV fluids to be satisfied.

Jesus met a woman who was thirsty…and really didn’t even know it. He knew her need and heart better than she did. The familiar story to most of you is from John 4 when Jesus takes His disciples through Samaria and subsequently meets up with a woman at a well. While she tried to take Him on all sorts of rabbit trails, Jesus kept bringing it back to Him…and her. He still does that for any and all who seek Him and seek to know Him. While we tend to chase after all sorts of things we think will satisfy, Jesus says, “I am the living water.”

My sermon series for August is from John and is themed as “Transformation.” Last week was “From Water to Wine.” Sunday’s is “From Thirst to Satisfaction.” I’d sure appreciate your prayers for me and all who hear. Thanks.
