What do these events have in common?
Build an ark when there is no rain
Surround mighty Jericho without carrying a weapon
Challenge an undefeated Goliath
Stand against a “hater” in order to save your people
Pray aloud, even when threatened with a fiery furnace
Give up fishing nets to follow the Messiah
Forgive those who throw stones in order to kill
Proclaim the Gospel to dignitaries, with no shame
Now, what do these men have in common?
Martin Luther, the great German reformer
William Tyndale, the English scholar, translator and printer
Dietrich Bonhoeffer, the valiant German pastor who resisted Hitler
Martin Luther King, Jr., the crusader for human rights
Billy Graham, the well-loved and well-respected evangelist from North Carolina
There is no doubt we could add to this list. It could run on so long as to never be finished.
Both lists involve ordinary people doing extraordinary things. All had dogged determination. They often stood against their peers. But they also had a solid faith that what they were doing was fulfilling God’s design for them, in that moment, in that time.
We are no different. We have been given a task. God’s design for us. For this moment. For this time. What is yours?
