Feelings are often relied upon to make decisions. Unfortunately, feelings can be deceptive. The old philosophy “it can’t be wrong because it feels so right” has led more people down the wrong path than can be counted. One of the problems is feelings can change on a dime, or a whim as we might say. “I don’t like that rule and feel this is a better one.” So we change the rules in midstream. Imagine how disastrous that would be in an athletic event. Even Jon McEnroe would have reason to really scream.

Marriages end because of feelings. Relationships/friendships end because someone got their feelings hurt. It is nothing to be tempted by wayward and renegade feelings. I dare say all, or most all of us, have at one time or another faced them.

Even toward God.

When I was reading Wisdom Hunter, the author used Psalm 13 to make a point in his book. This Stone took me back to that passage again. If you read the first two verses it makes one question David. How could he have written that? But a closer look also helps us see that verses 5-6 turn from the despair of those first two verses and utterly change the direction of David’s thinking and heart? I’ll let Randall tell you:

In verses 1-2, David is simply pouring out his feelings. In verses 5-6 he is stating his deep-down beliefs.

David could have shook his fist at God and called Him everything but “God,” but instead He chose to “hang his hat” on his beliefs, based on the certainty of God’s spoken promises. Those promises kept him anchored…not in his feelings, but in his beliefs.

So…do you depend on your feelings or on your beliefs?

This is one of my ongoing posts from this book:
