Patience

Thursday, August 6th, 2015

Growing up in Pennsylvania (back in the late 50s/early 60s) brought some local slang, slang I doubt many of you would know. We had our own dialect which I have had trouble separating myself from for the most part. My oldest corrects me every time I say “warsh” instead of “wash.” I still use “gumbands” instead of rubber bands.  I still say “shower and power” like “hour.” (I don’t know how to spell it like it sounds). “Pigs in the blanket” was stuffed cabbage. Anyway, one of our slang phrases was “cool your duels.” It was in reference to the duel pipes often found on cars that got hot when racing.

My sermon for Sunday is called “Cool Your Jets.” I figured it made more sense than cool your duels. 🙂 As you can tell by the blog title it is on patience. I’m sure a problem none of you/I ever face.

Patience is a virtue we are told. I suspect it depends on what we are waiting for/on which determines how patient we are. Paul tells us to “Clothe yourself with patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievance you may have against one another.” (Col.3:12-13)

Are you kidding me? In this “instant” society and dog-eat-dog world, having patience is often a missing commodity.  Truth is: patience is sort of like the word “love”-a word used interchangeably in our speech. I’d like to share more on patience with you so next week I plan to take some snippets from the sermon and use them. (You can breathe before then). 🙂

In the meantime, would you mind praying for me and for the church? And you don’t even have to wait until Sunday to do that! Thanks.
