I’m only going to give a quote that I will be using Sunday then direct you to my other blog for thoughts. I have decided that I could either repeat myself on both blogs, especially on the weekend, or give a “teaser” and direct you to The Great Adventure blog to see the thoughts I have been posting all week. The latter makes a whole lot more sense in several areas:
Time: yours and mine.
Repetition: makes no sense to repeat myself over and over.
Attention: I would like to draw your attention to The Great Adventure: A Year with Jesus since I will be sharing thoughts from my study there. (Yeah, I know, shameless promotion).
Okay…so here is the quote:
Your greatest danger is letting the urgent crowd out the important.
The quote is from a little booklet entitled Tyranny of the Urgent by Charles Hummel.
You can go here to get the first in this series for the week. The rest follow. I could link you but that would be an insult to your intelligence.
See you over there!!! Here is the one for the weekend.
There is a related statement that I often hear in my work as a scientist, namely, better is the enemy of good enough.
I like that statement Daniel.
urgent – definition:
compelling or requiring immediate action or attention; imperative; pressing: an urgent matter.
important – definition:
of much or great significance or consequence
Absolutely I give more weight to something that is urgent as opposed to something that is only important.
I realize this is a word game and not the kind of distinction that great books or great philosophers dwell on.
I understand what you are saying but the point of the quote is how we allow the important to be pushed away by the urgent.
Thanks, Bill!
I went there. Nice site!
I left one of my patented (often hard to hear), Law/Gospel comments.
Actually, it’s not mine…and it’s not patented. I borrowed it from Paul, and Luther (amongst many, many others).
Thanks for going over there Steve. I approved the comment 🙂 so I will comment over there. Always appreciate your comments (whether I agree, understand, or not). lol
The tyranny of the urgent is something I battle everyday. It’s the nature of my job.
Sometimes it can’t be avoided.
I like the quote. I think the quote was made to refer to things that we deem as urgent at the time it’s happening, but in hindsight realize that what is truly urgent is the thing we deem only important. It’s all about perspective. I could really go on a rambling spree here, but I’ll spare you. I’ve already been the “dreaded” commenter this week!
I could then call you the “ramblin’ man.” Comment away Floyd. it is always welcomed.
