Sigh

Written by cycleguy on November 30th, 2014

There are sighs of all kinds.

There is the sigh of frustration.

There is the sigh of resignation.

There is the sigh of hesitation.

There is also the sigh of satisfaction.

That is a good sigh. It is also the sigh Jo and I (and all the helpers experienced) after our FREE Thanksgiving dinner. You can read about it here. They say when you have a good experience you want to share you should write about it right away. Honestly? I was so weary after all was said and done I am not sure my fingers would have functioned.

But what a good weary. A satisfied weary. We were at the Lion’s Club about 9:00 (our day started much sooner) and had tons of people there to set up. In fact, we were all ready to go by 10:00! So we did what we do best…talk. Lots of visiting. I did some last minute things but also had a chance to talk to a man whom I later took a meal to. Yeah, I think he liked that hot food. When I got back I found out they had already served someone. Over the course of the next two hours we served people with both sit down and carry out. We also had some folks take food to the people working the gas stations in town, as well as the Sheriff’s department, the Spencer PD, and the EMT. We had some crazy people (OVCF people) who stood out on the street corner with a sign telling people to come in. Crazy? Yep. Temps were hovering at 30 with wind chill way below that. But you gotta love it.

What was cool is this was not an OVCF effort alone. Several people from organizations in town helped with their presence and some with food. Some stayed the whole day! They helped serve and clean up.

But my biggest kudos go to my OVCF  family. Those guys were simply fantastic. It could not have happened without their help (serving, food, money, encouragement).

Jo, of course, get the huge-est kudos. She organized it all. Cooked two turkeys (maybe that was the reason for our lack of turkey at home?) and several other dishes. She prefers being behind the scenes but, in this case, she goes to the head of the class.

We came home tired, foot sore, knees aching, and ready for a nap. Jo caught me later. 🙂 But there was also a deep sigh of satisfaction in my spirit.

And how was your Thanksgiving?

I spent the day with my daughter. Our feast consisted of grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup (her choice). A great day together. Glad yours was a blessing as well.

Hi Bill! Love that sigh in your spirit my friend. You did good! So did your wife and your church community. What a blessed ache and soreness…you make me so proud of you!!
Our Thanksgiving was crazy and lovely. My sister, her daughter and my daughters family all stayed with us. I was so tired today! But so happy they could be here with us to celebrate our blessings. My brother had the dinner (no leftovers, but no planning either so that’s a bonus). On to Advent, my favorite season.
Blessings to you and yours 🙂

Thanks Ceil. I can sense that sigh in your spirit also. A good sigh knowing you didn’t have to cook 🙂 , but more that you spent the day with family. I love Advent also so let’s go for it!

  3. I ran 9 miles, watched Tennessee basketball then went to Jan’s parents.

I had planned on riding after it was all over but the sun never came out and it was much colder than predicted. Plus it was after 3:30 when I was done with everything. I got in 23 miles today. 🙂 Glad you got a good run in and had time to visit as well.

  4. Terrific testimony of putting love into action. Well done my friend!

I’m sighing in relief today. It’s been so crazy and busy and wonderful this past week but I’m thankful that I have today to recuperate 🙂
    I’m tired!

    God bless.

Know what you mean TC. Tired wasn’t the word to express my utter fatigue when the day was all done (and then Sunday after my grandson left). 🙂 But i wouldn’t change a thing.

You have an awesome church, dude.

As for me, I spent the day alone at home. I had a turkey sub from Subway.

Our church does a community holiday dinner like this every year and have for quite a few years now. Always a blessing to be a part of something like this. A lot of work to be sure, but so worth it. Good job for doing this. Keep it up!

It was a blessing. If people only realized the blessing that does come from doing something for someone else it would make a big difference.

  8. Awesome. That sounds like a great tradition to start! My Thanksgiving went pretty well. Pretty laid back!
