Adopted

The Dave Thomas Foundation is probably one of the most well-known adoption advocates in the world. A visit to their website highlights their efforts to promote adoption with the motto “Every child deserves a family.” This year they were/still are running a promotion: buy a key tag for $1 and 90 cents of every tag sold goes to the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption. Another upside is a free Jr. Frosty every time you buy something and show the tag. 🙂 Dave Thomas knew what he was talking about. He was born on July 2,1932 in Atlantic City, NJ to a young unmarried woman he never knew. He was adopted at 6 weeks by Rex and Auleva Thomas, and as an adult became a well-known advocate for adoption, founding the foundation which bears his name. Adoption is an important option, certainly more preferential than abortion. The Dave Thomas Foundation seeks to find a home for every child in foster care.

Galatians 4:1-7 shows a dichotomy of being a slave versus being a son. One of the words he uses is the word “adopted.” When you consider the meaning of adoption and what all it entails, the richness of that relationship just sort of flows out of this passage. We are chosen. We are picked by Him. We are made part of the family with all the rights and privileges which comes from being a son.

I’m looking forward to sharing this Good News with the folks on Sunday. I’m wondering if you have given any thought to being so loved you have been adopted.  Thanks for your prayers.

  1. I think about it often. And am grateful. On a side note, Dave Thomas used to live in Knoxville.

I will be praying for you this morning in my devotionals. Hope Sunday with your flock is awesome.

  3. Adopted by the Most High – What an amazing image that is! Blessings for a great weekend and sermon, Bill!

HI Bill! I am aware of all the work that Dave Thomas’s foundations do for adoption. I really liked your wording about being so loved, we were adopted. There can be a real stigma on people who were adopted, kind of like they were rejected, and not good enough. (I hope my kids never felt that.) So much better to see adoption in the light of God’s meaning…precious and loved!
I think this will be an excellent message to share with your church this weekend,
    Ceil

I’m sure your kids felt loved Ceil. God’s meaning sure does bring a new and brighter perspective to the discussion.

Adoption requires a heart and a mind. All an abortion requires is a bad excuse.

As I listened to your sermon this morning about us being the adopted or chosen ones I thought about a movie I watched called cider house rules. There was a doctor in the movie that performed abortions but there were also kids there that were up for adoption…….some were lucky enough to be adopted and then there were those that were never chosen and remained in the home. One of the boys that was never chosen(he had health problems) wound up dying there. What a revelation it is that God chooses people like us with all our baggage and transfers us into his family with all the benefits. I can’t imagine that any of the kids chosen in that movie would have ever wanted to return to that house. Then why would any of us want to deny the grace that has been bestowed upon us……….great teaching pastor

I think this idea of being adopted by God is one of those things that becomes so familiar that we tend to gloss over it. But, if we stop and think about it, really think about it, it’s rather overwhelming to think of the full impact. It’s like us lowly peons being given a crown, a purple robe of righteous royalty, and a key to the Kingdom. Amazing, right?! It’s a great thing to ponder and to let sink into our souls.

    GOD BLESS!
