People

Do you agree? “Life would be great if it weren’t for people?”

I know there are people who feel that way. Since I happen to be a people person I consider people a “job hazard.” 🙂  Now…that’s not saying life is a burden. On the contrary, life in interesting. Some more than I can handle but interesting nonetheless.

Back in 1988 during the presidential campaign, commentators and voters made such a big deal about the character of the candidates that one of them ridiculed another one for being a womanizer. He even dared the press to follow him and find any misconduct on his part. Guess what? They found some monkey business taking place on Monkey Business.

Pride became his downfall.

Our media is full of stories of pride preceding a downfall. One TV evangelist falls and is rebuked by another. Not too much later than same evangelist falls.

Pride became his downfall.

There is a right way and a wrong way to treat others. One involves pride; the other involves humility/servanthood. In Galatians 5:26 Paul gives three ways not to treat each other: With arrogance, one-up-manship, and envy. Neither is good.

But in 6:1-5 he also tells us how to treat each other:

  • Restoring one another
  • Bearing one another’s burdens.

We are not islands. Try as we may we were not and are not meant to go it alone.

I’ll be preaching on these thoughts Sunday. We are also having a Meet, Greet, and Eat. We normally have two services due to space issues but while it solves one problem, it creates another. Two churches. So in order to help people get to know each other, we will occasionally do one service. It really cramps us big time, but we figure for one service people will adjust (and tolerate closeness). 🙂 We will be following that with a pitch-in dinner. If you are in this area and you are reading this, come join us! The more the merrier!

See you Sunday in the funny papers (Quote from where??? Do you know?) First correct answer gets a virtual high-five. Thanks ahead of time for your prayers.

I battled with pride a lot more when I was younger. I have since learned a thing or two. I am still far from perfect, but have made some progress during the years. I will be praying for you tomorrow morning during my devotionals.

  2. Jeff says:

You keep hammering on Pride. I don’t think Pride is the problem. I think Stupid is the problem. I like to call a spade a spade.

  3. Every time I think I have pride licked, I peel the onion and find a new layer.

  4. Ben Nelson says:

I’m guessing the quote was from Fiorello H. LaGuardia who read the comics over the radio during the depression.

It may have been but my reference was from “It’s a Wonderful Life” when Sam Wainwright tells George he’ll see him in the funny papers. 🙂

  5. Crystal says:

The comment…”see you in the funny papers”…likely originated in the early 1920’s in reference to the comics section in the newspapers (Sundays)…at first it was not a humorous saying but more of a “slam”… By the 1940’s it had become just a humorous way of saying “see you later” (lol..I had to look this up..used to hear the phrase a lot, but hadn’t heard it in a while)

  6. Pride is, indeed, a slippery slope!
Hope your Sunday service and activities are enjoyed by all. If I lived close by, I would definitely come! 🙂
    Sending prayers, Bill!

  7. Betty Draper says:

Pride was how this whole messy world got started. It was paradises up until Eve wanted to pridefully to be like God and took things into her own hands. That old serpent knew he could use her pride to trick her into disobeying God. And you are so right Bill, pride leads to stupidity. Pride loves to brag on anything and anyone but God, especially themselves. A prideful person will not want to hear the things of God and often time will slam God and Christians. I’m with Martha, wished I live close so I could come hear this sermon. You know the enemy hates for us Christians to ask forgiven for our prideful ways because he loses his hold on us. I sense a spiritual battle coming on, will be praying brother.

Good point about Eve, Betty. It was ALL her fault! Spoken like a true man right? 🙂 But you are right. Pride led to the Fall. Pride also closes the mind and heart to hear what others say. Thanks.
