Hail

Written by cycleguy on August 4th, 2015

No I didn’t say…you know…that other one. H E double hockey sticks. 🙂

God’s creation is amazing. As many of you know Jo and I left Monday morning for Ohio to bring our grandson back to Indiana for a (long) week. We decided to do it in one day. We are taking him to a baseball game tonight in Terre Haute so rather than make the long trip here, take a short break, and then head to the game, we decided to do it in one day. Did someone forget to tell me I am not as young as I used to be? So I slept an extra hour or two and we left the house about 8:45. A little over four hours later we arrived at their house. After about an hour or so turnaround, we headed back to Indiana. No problem. 6:00ish would be a good time.

Nobody told me God’s creation would do some really strange things. Like have bright sunshine and in the blink of an eye drive into a blinding thunderstorm. One minute I was tooling along at 75 mph (speed limit is 70) and the next minute I am being pelted by…wait a minute…what are those pings I hear? Did someone just throw a rock from an overpass and hit the top of my truck? No…as you can guess it was hail. Little pea-sized to ping pong sized hail. I tried to get underneath an overpass but two others beat me to it. I minimized the damage by sitting still. 🙂 10-15 minutes later I decided to leave and drove for about 10-15 miles in rain. Suddenly I was in bright sunshine and dry roads.

Weird is all I can say. Braden had head phones on but he could hear the hail pounding the roof. Jo covered her ears. I sat and wondered if my truck would look like a golf ball when it was said and done. Strangely enough, it was clean. I’d say Nissan built themselves a good Frontier. (As a side: we bought Jo’s Mazda at a place which specializes in cars declared “done” by insurance companies. Paint it white and it would look like the newest addition to Titleist golf balls. I even threatened to contact them for advertising).

Anyway, I got to see God’s amazing creation change in the drop of a hat. Sunshine, to thunderstorm with hail, back to sunshine. Never ceases to amaze me. Then I came to the office this morning to a full-on full moon which lit up the place like the lights were on. “The heavens declare the glory of God, the earth shows His handiwork.” No argument here.

Now…do you think He has made anything to slow the dude down and give his grandparents an extra oomph for the upcoming week? But I wouldn’t want it any other way. He is just another marvel of God’s creation. But I seriously doubt I will figure him out.

Yep, I hear ya’. I’m pacing myself through this week at camp with 6 grandkids and their parents. Giving myself grace and time for naps.

And that lets me be fully present for all the crazy hours we’re together.

Hi Bill! Yikes! I’m so glad that you were safe in that crazy storm. You sure did see a swing in the weather!

I am going to my daughter’s next week to babysit the 3 and 1 1/2 year old as my daughter delivers baby #3. Yeah, I hear you. It’ll be a bit crazy. We’ll make it though. You don’t have to figure him out. Just love him. Listen to him. He’ll love you for it!
    Blessings,
    Ceil

Good for you, Bill. Those things are the best part of this life. And an added show in the sky from our Father? Well, it just doesn’t get any better than that…

Ah, Bill, you are living my life from last summer–only we had two grandsons for a month! We had a terrific time together that none of us will ever forget. Enjoy this special blessing! God will give you the strength–and a few days to recover afterward! LOL!

  9. Hi Bill,

Glad you and Jo got there and back safely. Aren’t storms beautiful? Glad your car was okay with the hail though. Aiye.

Man has learned to subdue many things (even young boys at times) but the changing weather still reminds us that we’re not in control. Today is my first free Saturday morning for a while and I was looking forward to cycling with friends. The stormy weather (with possible hail) meant a morning at my computer with a coffee in my hand and a cat on my lap.
