Masquerade

This is not about the evils/horror/(take your pick) of Halloween.

I couldn’t sleep. No, it wasn’t because of some heavy weight on my heart. I took an inadvertent nap. After a very busy day I sat down in my chair to read. Next thing I knew: Bam! It was a 1/2 hour later. Way too close to bedtime to take a 20-25 minute snooze. Stop I stayed up (actually got back out of bed) to spend some time reading my devotions for today (Tuesday). They were about costumes.

Spiritual fakery is one of the chief tools of the enemy. It is one of the key ingredients of spiritual blindness.

I don’t know if Paul David Tripp planned for his devotion to focus on costumes or not but there it was.  He writes: “The kingdom of self is a costume kingdom. This is because one of the enemy’s most useful tools is the ability of wrong to imitate right.”

Hallloween is all about masks. Who can hide who they really are the best? Many followers of Christ are becoming or are already adept at hiding who they really are. Present company included. Wearing the clothing of the personal kingdom to hide the real me. Often wearing a costume to cover me. Sin does that. Since sin wants to reign in me, can I expect anything less?

I’m thinking that maybe instead of spending so much time worrying about the rightness or wrongness off Halloween, maybe we should concern ourselves with our own masks & masquerade.

What do you think?

  1. How we all need to take off the mask and just be who God created us to be. Easier said than done, that’s for sure, but we should consciously decide to remove our masks every day.
    Blessings, Bill!

Rather timely I think. The news is full of people in DC having the FBI get the facts out and Hollyweird naming names and exposing perverts. Fake people and bad actors are easy enough to spot in my opinion.
I am pretty easy to figure. I say what I think and do what I do. I don’t hide behind a façade or say I believe things that contradict my actions.
I agree many people do and religion is one of the overused facades. I don’t think they fool many people.
And Halloween is just a fun diversion for kids away from the everyday routine. Only religious nut bags think it is some kind of devil worship nonsense. Not that I have anything against real devil worshippers.

I’m not a Halloween basher. I do think some have taken it too far. However, I leave you at the point where you say you have nothing against real devil worshipers. I’m actually surprised you believe in the devil since you don’t believe in God.

I didn’t say I believe in the devil, which I don’t. I just don’t have anything against some one who does. Every super hero needs a super foe. That’s what legends, myths and comic books are about. Some root for Batman and some root for the Joker. Some for God and some for the Devil. It is just part of the supernatural believers world view.

Yes! Just because you don’t agree with something doesn’t necessarily mean it’s wrong! Too many critique on the “masks” that people wear, instead of looking at the heart.

  4. Excellent! I agree with you 100%. We spend far too much time pointing fingers and picking up rocks to throw. Not that we should not call evil by its name, but we should be quick to check ourselves first and quicker to offer a remedy for sin than to just pointing it out. Thank you for this timely message. BTW, if you have time please visit my blog lighthousedevotions.wordpress.com I am a lighthouse aficionado and have written a couple of devotions that deal with this subject.

Thanks Joe for coming by. I do agree with you on the finger pointing and rock throwing. I prefer to build bridges not walls. And I will check out your blog. Again, thanks for coming by.

I think David Tripp is right on…easy to wear a mask instead of being real.
