I Hate Religion

Written by cycleguy on January 10th, 2010

So…hate is a pretty strong word. We would never allow the girls to use that word, especially when referring to another person.  So we substituted.  Words like “dislike immensely.”  Or “I have a very strong feeling against that person/place/ or thing.”  Well, you get the point.  But I can honestly say that I hate religion.  I just finished reading Jesus Loves You This I Know and have started The Naked Gospel.  Both are coming at this idea of religion from different angles but they are both saying the same thing: religion is to be despised.   I applaud Brit Hume’s stand for Christianity on national TV.  See it here through another blog. Mr. Hume is talking about a faith not a religion.

In 1995 I read a book that totally changed my life and approach to ministry.  You can still buy that book here.  (When you are done with it you may want to read its follow-up here.)  I read Wisdom Hunter while on a personal retreat of fasting and praying for 3 days and I was overwhelmed by my emotions and overcome by one of the most powerful realizations of God’s grace that I have ever had.  I wept almost uncontrollably for what seemed like page after page. But I came away with a resolve that I would never again allow religion and all its ugly sisters to be my modus operandi.

Reading these two books have brought back that resolve in a new way.  But let me tell you why I hate religion.   These are just some random thoughts I wrote down in my Moleskine as I thought of them:

  • Religion is self-righteous.
  • Religion is judgmental.
  • Religion is cold.
  • Religion is lifeless.
  • Religion is dead.
  • Religion is based on works.

Can you think of any more?  What do you think of religion?  By the way:  there is an alternative.  Do you know what it is?

Religion is one of those words that I think people view differently depending on their background. I tried simply looking of the definition of religion just to get a secular view of what it means and was overwhelmed with information. I think the key is when the act of doing or behaving in a manner that directs the attention to us rather than God, there is a problem. I think we all “get religious” at times. We are all selfish beings by nature craving attention. Its hard to push that aside.

It’s interesting how over time words take on different meaning. I think the words “religious” and “religion” have done just that.
I don’t think the word religion has always carried that negative connotation, but has been “abused” by those who exibit the qualities you mention in your post.

I Love it when you get me thinking early on a Monday 🙂 Makes a great carry over from the weekend!
