Thankskeeping

You may be looking at the title and thinking, “Well Bill didn’t proofread his blog very well.”   🙂

Fear not my English critics.

You may also be looking at the graphic and thinking, “Wait!  Have I lost a day or two? Have I been in some of time warp?  Bill usually posts his sermon topic late Thursday and takes it through the weekend. “

Let me assure you, my fellow time travelers, that you have not slept two days away nor have you joined Marty McFly in the Delorean.

My sermon title for this weekend is “Thanksgiving Not Thankskeeping.”

And it is late Tuesday and Wednesday for this post.  So have no fear that your world has not been messed up by the space time continuum.

The plan is for us to leave sometime Wednesday afternoon for Ohio where we will see Janna and Braden and Tami (who is making the trip from Knoxville).  We will be spending two nights in a hotel.  Thursday morning Tami and Janna are running in a 5k called the Turkey Trot (if it was me running they would call it the Sloth Trot since I don’t run).  Braden may take part in a 1/2 mile kid thingy while they are running.  Grandpa and Mamaw will be cheering them all on.  We will be making our way home Friday afternoon.  That means…

NO COMPUTER ACCESS.  SELF-IMPOSED MEDIA FAST.

If you comment on this post before we leave Wednesday, your comment will definitely appear.  After that…it will be a shot in the dark.  I will have my phone to approve comments if I get around to it, but I will not comment back until maybe Saturday.  I get to see my two girls and grandson so irregularly that I fully intend to “be all there” as Jim Elliott once said.  (“Wherever you are be all there.”)

I will return Sunday to preach on the topic of Thanksgiving Not Thankskeeping.  Thanks is meant to be given away.   We have failed in our American culture, and certainly more so in our American church culture, when we limit Thanksgiving to one day a year.  I am on a mission beginning this Thanksgiving to make sure I record one thing every day for which I am thankful.  I have too much to be grateful for to keep it to myself.

So…have a blessing-filled Thanksgiving Day.  But more…why not make a blessing-filled resolve to see each day as a new one for us to search out things to be thankful for.

One last thing: I did this last year and had funStarting the Monday after Thanksgiving (November 26th),  I will be posting something about Christmas until Christmas day. It can be fun, serious, a song, a quote, a gleaning from a movie, etc.  I was wondering who else might like to join me?

Thank you, Bill, for your encouraging posts, and for your love for our Abba. May he give you safe traveling and a wonderful time of fellowship during your break.

  2. Thanks must be given and not kept and hoarded. It must be given.
I haven’t decided if I’m going to do a big Christmas deal or not.

  3. Sele says:

Bill, I hope that you and your family have a great Thanksgiving. I pray you will have safe travels. I have been thinking about Christmas extravaganza and think it is a great idea to celebrate all month long. I will be joining you starting Monday.

Happy Thanksgiving Bill! It’s a blessing to know you.

The Christmas idea sounds great. I can’t participate due to time constraints but I can’t wait to read! I LOVE Christmas.

  6. Maybe I’ve made it before you get on the road? 🙂
We all have a lot to be thankful for – we just need to take the time to realize it. I’m glad that you’ll be doing it. I’m going to try to as well!

Happy Thanksgiving Bill and family! I’m happy to know you will all be together. 🙂 Make sure to collect all the hugs from Braden that you can. A post everyday about Christmas would be awesome. I have decided the “stuff” of Christmas is going out the window this year, a lot less shopping, straining the budget & focusing on that impossible perfect gift….all focus on Jesus and what His birth means to us all. Looking forward to your posts, they are always excellent.
