Weird

Written by cycleguy on January 30th, 2013

I have been called many things…some of them true.

I am called Bill (True).

I am called Dad (Very true).

I have been called Pastor Bill (True again).

I have been called Cycleguy (Also True).

I have been called other names…both true and not so true.

Loser.  (Picture “L” sign on forehead)

Strange.  (That comes time to time from the same ones who call me “Dad” while rolling their eyes)  🙂

Different.  (Picture people who don’t know me very well and can’t quite pigeon-hole me)

I know I am not any of those.  Unless, of course, someone is joking with me, then I let it slide.  (Hint hint daughters of mine)  But now I am considered Weird.  No comment from the Peanut Gallery please.  Then again, once I am done with this post you may concur.   Just remember though: it takes one to know one.  🙂

Why am I considered weird?  Let me ask you a question first: does anyone NOT know what happens this Sunday?  Do I need to give a football hint? Do I need to give a $4 million per 30 second commercial hint?  (Can you imagine what could be done with that money so frivolously thrown away on eye candy and outrageous attempts to get our attention?)  Do I need to give a “this will be the most watched show all year” hint?

Now you see why I am considered weird.  Not because I don’t know what is happening this Sunday, but BECAUSE I DON’T CARE!   Yeah, I may be the only male in the country who just doesn’t give one rip about what is touted as THE game.   It has been years since I watched a football game, even the SB.  Not even when the Steelers were playing (I grew up in PGH).  I have had a not-so-comfortable feeling with football for years, and the SB in particular, but I am really struggling to keep an even keel this year.   Please don’t get me wrong.  I have friends who love the game.   I have pastor friends who will sit down to watch it.  I know churches will change their whole Sunday night program (if they have them) to accommodate the SB.  To each his own.

But at the same time I have enough trouble with my thoughts that I don’t need any help.   I see a tremendous problem with our priorities when we become obsessed with a game.   It is almost like the world stops you know?

My Sunday afternoon will be spent at the office getting ready for Monday.  Then I will come home and watch a movie with if Jo she wants to.  If not I will go into my ManCave, pop in a DVD, work on my jigsaw puzzle, probably eat some chips and ice cream along the way, go to bed at a decent hour and wake up at 4:00 refreshed.

Yeah, guess I am weird.  🙂  Do you have any plans for Sunday?

I won’t be watching the SB either. It’s not that I don’t like football, it’s just that this is the sort of ‘game’ where too many folks admit they don’t watch for the sport, but for the commercials. When something gets that far out of balance, count me out. My church is one that moves its 6:00 p.m. service earlier to accommodate the game. My pastor put a good spin on it encouraging folks to join them for the game after they take them to church.

You are right Daniel. So many watch it for the commercials and then find something else to do. That is the crux of my problem with the “I have enough trouble with my thoughts” line. Anyway, Rob put a good spin on it. 🙂

  2. Paul says:

Yep, my plans are like some others, I will be watching the game…at least the first half. I will probably head home during half time. Enjoy your puzzle and movie. And, I don’t think you are weird.

    • cycleguy says:

Thanks Paul. I reckon some would say weird is how we met…riding a whole week on a bicycle 50-60 miles per day in July. 😛 Good to hear from you my friend.

  3. Bill, my son will be getting home Sunday night just before it. I will probably watch it with him.

  4. Tom Dixon says:

You aren’t the only one – I am going to use Sunday to catch up on writing some blog posts and getting ahead for the next week. Thanks for the laugh tonight…needed it!

  5. theoldadam says:

Gonna go to worship. Receive the body and blood of our dear Lord…go to Bible study afterwards…and then watch the game.

Do the math Bill. 111,000,000 are projected to watch the SB. That means 220,000,000 will not. You are definately in the majority. As for the advertisers they get to reach those 111,000,000 for $4,000,000 which is a cost of 3.6 cents per person. Far less than a stamp. I don’t think the advertisers find that frivolous. (maybe even a good deal)To question my priorities because I watch a football game seems a bit judgemental. Watching a DVD, doing a jigsaw puzzle, eating chips and ice cream. Now that is wierd. Enjoy the movie. And don’t worry about my priorities.

    • cycleguy says:

Well Jeff, I think I got under your skin. And it wasn’t even a religious matter. 🙂 Notice my comment in quotes about the money spent on commercials. And not being judgmental. Just thoughtful and challenging and a bit tongue-in-cheek. Someone can say the same thing to me about my cycling in the summer. A tad bit obsessive. Enjoy the game Jeff and I will be weird.

  7. Phil says:

Not totally obsessed with it, but I will be watching the game with some friends. I’m a sports guy in that I can find about any sport entertaining for the most part. I wouldn’t go out of my way to watch most of them, but if forced to I could usually find something to enjoy. Anyway, I don’t think you’re weird; at least not because you’re not watching the SB. 😉

  8. Betty Draper says:

Guess I will endure the game with my husband. He has ask for certain foods that is normally not in our usual menu…since he is a good man I will fix anything he wants.

Baseball and soccer are about the only two sports I like to watch, maybe it’s because they do not have half dressed cheer leaders, hehe.

    • cycleguy says:

Baseball yes. Soccer no. Sort of the same as hockey. What are they doing? I will watch a baseball game though. ‘Course I like to watch cycling events too. Hmmmm reckon I am weird. 🙂 You are a good woman Betty, fixing what he wants.

  9. floyd says:

I agree. I think when it was just a game it was fine. Now that it’s become like a religious holiday it irks me. I watch bits and pieces of games, but can’t watch one all the way through. That old ADD thing maybe, but then again, it’s just not a priority. And that is the key word… When material things become priority… We’re in trouble.

    • cycleguy says:

I am not ADD but even if I watched the game I couldn’t sit still for that long. 🙂 It goes beyond me why people would also sit through the 7 1/2 hours of pregame stuff. WOW! as you know I agree with you.

  10. I guess I’m going to be weird this Sunday. I’m doing something at church and then my wife and I are going to watch my friends’ kids so that they can go to a sunday school Super Bowl party. I don’t think I’ll actually see any of the game for the first time in a while.

  11. You’re not alone, Bill. I’ve watched maybe one super bowl in my life, and it was just to hang out with the other people watching. I don’t get that excited about it! So don’t worry, I’ll be weird with you. 🙂

  12. Susan says:

Weird is fine. This is Harry’s first time in 23 years that we don’t have a TV so he can watch it. He conned me into asking some friends (who are not Superbowl fans) if he can watch it at their house. They love Harry, so he will not miss this all-important event this year. :p

  13. JimN says:

Are you close to Lousiville? I will watch the world cyclecross race.
    Where do you cycle?
Good comments on the parking situation for the small group. Where I live you can only legally park on one side of the street, maybe they violated that… I will watch the whatever is left of the SB when I
    get home

    • cycleguy says:

I live in Spencer. Not much interested in cyclocross since my cycling is the kind I use my own two legs for. Enjoy your time.

FYI for all:(I commented on another blog about the parking situation)

  14. Dan Erickson says:

Hey, I don’t really care, either. Heck, the Seattle Seahawks (my region) went to the playoffs and I didn’t watch a single game. I might watch the Superbowl, but less for the football and more for the commercials because I teach Mass Media courses.

  15. Debbie says:

You have me smiling! Our daughter watches a lot of Animal Planet . .and they have a ‘puppy bowl’ on at the same time as the SB. I’m thinking putting on our own dvd will be better and the chips and ice-cream don’t sound bad either!
    God bless you!

  16. Ed says:

I’m not that crazy about the SB either. If there is a party somewhere I will usually pop in, eat and run, but not into watching the game. I’d like to play some touch football before I get too old though. 🙂
