Tornado

Written by cycleguy on March 26th, 2013

No our area has not experienced one of these recently, even with the crazy “Spring” weather we are “enjoying.”   I am referring to tornadoes of the human variety.  Specifically, the 6-year old male species-type.   Saturday our oldest daughter brought our grandson to the house after swinging through Columbus, OH to pick him up.  Two words:

HOLY.  MACKEREL!

After eating out for lunch (a drive of 30 minutes that had him thinking we were out in Egypt), we came home to watch a movie (his pick was Tranformers 3 and I didn’t argue  🙂 ).  That didn’t last too long before he was an Autobot fighting the Decepticons.   Sunday after church we ate lunch, and afterwards they went home while I went to the office.  When I got home he wanted to watch CARS and The Avengers.  Monday we took him to see The Croods (thoughts following) and then Jo & Tami took him home while I did some work at the office.  When I got home I found him playing basketball (he is an Ohio State fan) and practicing his slam dunks.  I think the score was 900-something in OSU’s favor.  He slowed down a tad to eat and watch some of Captain America.  Emphasis on some since he was soon fighting bad guys.  Today (Tuesday) Jo and I took him back to Ohio so Tami could head straight home.

CAN. ANYONE. BRING. ME. OXYGEN. AND. SOME. ENERGY. PILLS?

The youthful exuberance.  The energy. The seemingly indefatigable “go.”  I now know why kids are given to younger parents.  Why Jo & I would not think of adopting or becoming foster parents of anyone but babies.   Now…lest you think I am complaining…not in the slightest. His visits are too seldom and too far in between.  But then again, if they were any closer I don’t think I would have time to recuperate.  🙂  A-A-N-N-N-N-D I wouldn’t trade these moments for anything in the world.  They sure do remind me I am getting old though.

Three words about the movie (The Croods): GO. SEE. IT!!  It is a good family-friendly animated film from the Dreamworks studio.  Nothing crude 🙂 about it.  Braden loved it.  He laughed.  Sat quietly through some emotional scenes involving the father/daughter (I felt some water leaking from somewhere).  There were moments of spiritual application; of following your dreams; of not being confined by fear; of how rules can control our lives; and just some good action. I read one review that said something about Eep’s (the daughter) short dress and “low” top (think of a modern Wilma & Betty); and Guy (the orphan boy) being shirtless, but come on people!  It is an animated flick.   You will see more revealing garbage in magazines and commercials.  More can be said with more space, but suffice it to say I think it would be worth seeing.

There you have a capsule of my last few days.  I am going to close now to take a nap.  Meanwhile, how do you react when your routine is upset?

  1. I like to say I roll with it. I don’t normally like to lie though.

I am a creature of routine. The slightest whisper away from my norm can destroy me.

I imagine it would be hard for you, knowing the way you have said you are from time to time. I do believe you and your daughter would like the movie though. Some good father/daughter stuff there.

  3. I’m a young parent, but even I can’t keep up with my twin tornado toddlers. They’re fun for a little bit, but then I’m ready to “go back to work” just to take a breather 🙂

Makes me appreciate (or question the sanity) of parents or stay-at-home moms/dads. 🙂 Working from home would be out of the question for me. I admire you Loren.

Any change in routine brings massive fatigue, but I think it’s good. Imagine the time spent with your grandson and how it will influence his life… What a position of honor. With all of your responsibilities in life that you do with passion and honor, my guess is that none is higher than that one. Time well spent… It’s good to be tired…

  5. Sounds like a blast. It’s tiring to have those times, but so good for us to break the routine. 🙂 I’m sure I’ll end up seeing the Croods at some point. Glad it’s good. There are very few kids’ movies I get to skip so always happy to hear about good ones! Thanks Bill.

it was…a tiring blast. I think you and the family will like the movie Jason. Guy (an orphan)is a challenger then accepted into the family. Works with your family for sure.

Your post makes me laugh. My toddler is non-stop GO! And I am tired!

I remember shortly after graduating High School some friends began having kids. Not me.
Then shortly after college more had kids. Not me.
Round two of college completed and still no kids for me…I had to focus on my career.
Now, my friends have teens or pre-teens and I have a toddler.

Can’t say I regret having a baby later in life, but my energy level sure isn’t what it used to be.
I thank God my mom still has energy to keep up with her last grandson!

Now you know exactly what I am talking about! I don’t envy you TC, but know you will do your best to train him right. 🙂

Your post describe our weekend with our two grandchildren, two and four staying at our house. Ace and I said the very same thing, little children are given to young, not old. But we too would not change a minutes of their time with us…just glad we have a few days breather till they come back.

Now back to writing without interruption of, Grandma can I sit on your lap while you write. Of course, you are more important then whatever Grandma is writing.

Aaah yes, another grandparent. Only difference is you see yours more than we do. Blessings and strength to you and Ace. 🙂

You are such a good grandpa! I’m not a grandparent yet, so am taking notes! Number 1. Say goodbye to routines. 🙂 Thank you and God bless you and give you strength and 5 hour energy drinks!

  9. Ha ha ha. I think this may be my favorite post of yours. How fun to spend time with your grandson. And thanks for the movie review! My family keeps me from ever dreaming that I’ll have a normal routine. Lol

Keep dreaming Melanie. And remember: just when you think you will have one…poof it is gone! 😛 Glad you enjoyed it and hope you get a chance to see the movie.

I’m very much a routine person however whenever my routine is broken I try and see what God is telling me or wanting me to learn/do. It sure does sound like you had fun!

I am glad to finally find out what that movie is about, it’s playing here in Danville. What a blessing that you guys could spend time with Braden!!! I do know how you feel, that’s what I think when I’ve had Jonah overnight, I am happily exhausted & realize that’s why we have children when we’re younger! 🙂 I just go with the flow when my routine is upset, otherwise there is no way I could do the job at school that I have…..there is never a “fixed” schedule…there’s supposed to be, but things happen & changes are made. Plus, having raised 5 hooligans, I guess I’ve learned not to get worked up over my applecart getting toppled. Lord knows I get upset over way too many other things in my life. 😉 Very good post here Bill.
