No…this is not a post about lawyers.  Well, not directly.   It is not about putting them on the same level as car salesman, nor is it about being an “ambulance chaser.”   IT IS about a book called Dead Lawyers Tell No Tales by Randy Singer.  I am part of the Tyndale Bloggers Network and I agreed to take part in reviewing the book and the blog tour.  Here is my take.

First, I need to make a totally true confession:  I love reading Randy Singer’s books.  As a child I used to watch Perry Mason (yes, I am that old) and still catch them on reruns.  I used to watch a lot of Law & Order because they always included court room drama in their one hour show.  Ironically, I have never read any of John Grisham’s books, but have read about all of Randy’s.  When I saw Dead Man Tell No Tales was available, I just had to read it.

I was not disappointed.  A disgraced ex-college quarterback who got caught in a point-shaving scandal gets released from prison, attends and graduates from law school, and is hired by a founding partner (Harry) in a law firm (the only one interested in hiring him). Landon soon finds himself embroiled in a complicated case where his mentor and two other lawyers from the firm are murdered.  It is up to Landon to carry on Harry’s case, in which he had been co-counsel. Twists and turns abound.  What I like about Randy’s novels is he does not tell who the perpetrator is till the end when the lawyer, Landon, reveals who it is (just like Perry Mason).

What shines through in Randy’s stories is his knowledge of the courtroom.  Procedures, admissible and inadmissible evidence, improper questioning, and more, are all seen through an expert’s eye.  What I also like is Randy does not paint his characters as lily white. They make mistakes.  They have lapses in judgment.  They sometimes come to wrong assumptions. Their faith is tested.  But always it survives and grows, without being  “preachy.”  If you like mysteries wrapped around courtroom drama, not only is Randy Singer your writer, this is your book!

I received a complimentary copy of this book as part of the Tyndale Blog Network.  I was not required to give a good review.

Welcome back. I hope you are rested and relaxed for the week ahead.

I have never heard of Mr. Singer before. What is his best work so far? I will add that to my reading list.

Thanks Daniel. I will post later this week about my “vacation.” To answer your question: it is hard for me to pick the best of Mr. Singer’s work. i am currently rereading them all and am in Book #4. Each stands on its own, although some of the characters do intersperse. I would start with the first, Directed Verdict, and go from there. I think you will like them.

I’m probably *real* close to your age, Bill – I remember Perry Mason as a child (find your local MeTV affiliate if you have cable – it is still on nightly)and also like L & O, as well as most of the spin-offs. Unlike you, I have also read most – but not all – of John Grisham’s stuff. Add them to your “read before I turn 80” list, but add ’em – I’ll add Randy to my “soon to read fiction list” based on your say-so. 🙂

Oh yeah – welcome back from vacation 🙂

I am 60 Rick. Not ashamed of that. 🙂 We don’t have MeTV. I have never gotten into the L & O spinoffs. My secretary has Grisham’s books. I should borrow them. I do believe you will like Randy’s work.

      Oh yeah…thanks.

Welcome back Bill, enjoyed those who posted for you. Hope your vacation was restful and refreshing.

I am looking into Randy’s books. Ace and I love the courtroom drama’s also. Since we travel a lot and I am able to read while riding it might be something I would like to do. In fact we leave in a couple days for a four day journey to Missouri for a conference with our kids. I may need a couple good books. Look forward to your next post.

I have a guest post or two to help me get back into the swing of things Betty. My first real post will be Tuesday night/Wednesday. It will be a reflection of my vacation. Go to your local library and start with Directed Verdict, then Irreparable Harm. i think you will be hooked.

  4. Sounds interesting. I’m too young to really remember Perry Mason from anything but reruns, but I do remembers Ironsides.

  5. Zee says:

Hmm, interesting. I have never read this writer’s books, but I do like Grisham… Sounds like a good one. Will put on my “to-read” list.

  6. Glad you’re back bro’…hope you’re refreshed and ready to roll!

  7. Dan Erickson says:

Looks interesting. I love the the title.

  8. floyd says:

Sounds interesting, Bill. I might have to wait until some of my non fictional dust settles before I can tackle that one!

Glad to have you back. Hope you had a great time and thanks for letting me fill in with the rest of your friends and family.

  9. Hope you had a wonderful trip, Bill! This sounds great. I love a good fiction story (even though I don’t get to read it too often). Thank you.

I read fiction mostly at home Jason. ‘Course I don’t have a family like you do. It is my diversion though from normal reading.

  10. Unfortunately I’ve found out from lawyers that the courtroom drama of the movies is far from the boring reality of what they face 🙁 Haha.
    But thanks for the recommendation!

    • cycleguy says:

It is true since time is a factor (as is practicality). I have never seen the judicial system work as fast as TV/movies. 🙂 however, Randy is a trial lawyer and doesn’t push the “tomorrow it goes to trial and we will have a verdict in an hour” button. You’re welcome.

  11. I love your book reviews, Bill! Adding it to my wish list.

  12. Debbie says:

Sounds good, Pastor Bill, and having you back is even better! 🙂
My oldest is going to law school, so glad this wasn’t a lawyer slam. haha!
    God bless you!

WHEW! Glad I didn’t diss lawyers. 🙂 Good to hear from you Deb and I will post my own post on Wednesday. Needed to get back into the swing of things first. 🙂
