Awesome!!

A couple of years ago our grandson, Braden, was visiting with us when The Lego Movie made its debut. Trust me when I say him being here was the only reason I would go. The theme song was heard over and over and over..ad infinitum, ad nauseum in the movie and the radio: “Everything is Awesome!” Other than the fact I sat through the movie with him and found it a tad bit better than I thought it would be (if you were a child), that song was absolutely annoying. On several fronts actually. First, it is annoying because it was played soooooo much and I could hear kids singing it. Second, and this is the real kicker, it simply is not true.

While I am not a scrooge and understand a childhood song more than I care to admit, everything is not awesome. Seriously? Everything is awesome? Do I really need to go into things which are not?

So here is my thinking: Everything is not awesome; God is. My problem, I think, comes from the fact we have over-trivialized the word. “Mom, these cookies are awesome!” “Awesome sermon today, Bill!” (Really? You say that every week). Then we sing, “Our God is an awesome God,” and wonder why things fall flat.

My sermon this is week is Captured by God’s Awesomeness. I plan to spend time on the idea that God is truly the Awesome One.

I think if you are a kid everything is kind of awesome. A theistic God on the other hand, to me, is simply a fairy tale.

I’m with you. Let’s save the AWESOME for the only One who will ever be. All honor and glory go to HIS name!

Good point, Bill. Like all words that get over used they lose their power and meaning. I’m not in awe of much, but when I ponder this world and the Power behind the sun and the constant perpetual motion. Then I muse His love, mercy, and grace, the word awesome doesn’t begin to capture the essence of who God is. There are no words. Just the utter blown awayness that we struggle to capture with a word. Me too.

Great thoughts. Praying for your words.

    Awesome! 😉

    Ok- I had too :).

Side note: That movie was better than expected though- I agree!

Hi Bill! I often think that if I had more faith, everything would be awesome. But, that’s in a perfect world, and we don’t have that. Not everything is wonderful and great, our world is populated with people who are not perfect (including me) so the ‘awesome factor’ gets diluted on a regular basis.
My hope is that children grow up appreciating the awesomeness of the world and people that God created. God expresses himself in creation too, so let’s all seek out those pockets of awesome!
    Blessings on your sermon,
    Ceil

I love the title of your sermon Bill and I am sure the content will be “awesome”, sorry couldn’t help myself.

  7. Kari Scare says:

We’ve overused a lot of words, Bill, and subsequently lost their meaning and effectiveness. Mind-blowing.

  8. Yes, God is truly the only One who deserves the adjective “awesome.” I agree, Bill, that this word is too overused and has become trivialized by such.
    Blessings for a great sermon!

  9. Rodney Olsen says:

To quote another animated movie, The Incredibles.

    Mum: “Everyone’s special, Dash.”

Dash: “Which is another way of saying no one is.”

When we overuse words they very quickly lose their power and effectiveness.

I’m sure that you’ll do a great job of putting the awe back into awesome when you talk about our amazing God.
